In 1930, Picasso bought a château in Boisgeloup, 40 miles outside Paris, and converted a stable on the property into a sculpture studio. There, he made monumental plaster busts, including “Head of a Woman.” The sculpture was inspired by his young companion Marie-Thérèse Walter, whose features, he felt, lent themselves to representation in a classical mode.
