Outside In – a voyeuristic observation into people’s lives during lockdown

“Without the people around you, what else is there really?”

Captured around Los Angeles after dark, British-Iranian director Nima Nourizadeh’s new film OUTSIDE IN is a voyeuristic observation into people’s lives from afar and an intimate collection of moments intertwined, scored by Alexis Taylor & Joe Goddard (Hot Chip), and Omid Nourizadeh (16B)

Shot using a long zoom lens, Nourizadeh uses windows as the literal frame, guiding the audience into the characters’ lives while making use of the “off-screen”, giving viewers space to impose their own narratives.

The film pays tribute to depictions of LA at night in countless films. The long lens photography creates a visual language reminiscent of The Long Goodbye, and a tone that pays homage to the opening sequences in De Palma films.

“It goes without saying, that LA itself was a huge character and a major inspiration for this film. Being “stuck”, unable to move around freely, or leave, allowed me to look deeper at the city through a very different lens… I ultimately wanted to create something that accurately reflected the moment and the feeling we were experiencing, resulting in a more considered and attentive piece of observational film.”

The film functions as a time capsule of emotions we all experienced in the spring of 2020 but more importantly, serves as a timeless celebration of connectedness and community.
