ON HOUSING: Affordable Housing in the 21st Century City // 10.01.20

In the context of this year’s ARCH 7010 studio, the Department of Architecture is inviting you to a virtual symposium that addresses the question: What constitutes affordable housing of the future in New York City and abroad? Bringing together four leading practitioners and scholars together with our students, the symposium will explore models of affordable housing specifically addressing New York’s current housing crisis and the city’s goals to provide housing for a wide range of demographics in the coming years. These challenges will be addressed at multiple scales, ranging from the regional to the city block, and will include analysis of architectural projects with innovative approaches toward designing affordability both in the United States and in Europe. The discussion will consider how these projects fit within broader regional initiatives, the role of public-private partnerships, and how housing projects themselves can become public assets that strengthen the communities in which they are situated.
