Oberlander Prize Forum II: Design as Activism

Landscape architect Gina Ford, Co-founder and Principal of Agency Landscape + Planning, engages three pioneering designers to address issues including social justice, climate justice, environmental justice, revisionism, and erasure. Sierra Bainbridge, Senior Principal and Managing Director, MASS Design Group, Maura Rockcastle, Principal and Co-Founder, TEN x TEN, and Chelina Odbert, CEO and Founding Principal, Kounkuey Design Initiative, discuss their respective core principals, design methodologies and share examples of built work. Bainbridge presents her firm’s work at Butaro District Hospital (Rwanda) and The National Memorial For Peace and Justice (Alabama), revealing how design spurs individual and community rejuvenation. Rockcastle discusses her company’s projects in Minneapolis and St. Paul and their innovative research and design methodology. Odbert explains how her firm’s work at Kibera Public Space Project (Kenya) expanded access to public space and the Eastern Coachella Valley Initiative (California), which equitably introduced public space, housing, transportation, and environmental remediation. This event is part of the public engagement associated with the Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize and took place on October 28, 2022, at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, TX.
