Neil Cummings, Marysia Lewandowska – Everything

Lecture date: 1999-11-19

On an individual and cultural scale we are described by a bewildering range of clothes, tools, art, trinkets, gifts, cuisine, souvenirs, electronic technology, buildings and rubbish. Objects and images are spilling from every shelf, cupboard, display case, television, vitrine, monitor, supermarket, studio, gallery, shop, museum and land-fill site. A series of recent projects by Neil Cummings and Marysia Lewandowska – some on a grand scale, others in a discreet and ephemeral way – have explored the institutions and structures that have evolved to produce, accumulate and classify the stuff within our cultures.

Cummings and Lewandowska have worked together since 1995. Their collaborative projects, widely exhibited, pursue an interest in how the practices of art fit into a broader sense of material culture.
