Nasrine Seraji – How Are We Doing, Boule?

Lecture date: 1996-05-23

How does one reconcile the collective celebration of the musical event with the individualistic act of listening? The gathering of people together around a musical event should be an opportunity that offers listeners a variety of sensations and experiences capable of reflecting their diverse individual expectations. Nasrine Seraji’s pursuit of a solution to these concerns determined the evolution of her practice Atelier Seraji’s prize-winning design for a new philharmonic hall for Bremen, Germany. The geometry of the project undermines its hybrid characteristics: the vanishing points of the site and the musical events. The project’s geometric configurations are balanced by the uniqueness of the volumetric core of the concert hall. This lecture is organized in conjunction with the AA exhibition A New Philharmonic for Bremen. Nasrine Seraji studied at the AA before founding her own studio in Paris. She has taught at the AA, Columbia and Princeton Universities, and is Professor and Chair of the Architecture Department at Cornell University.
