Inhoma Design

Montreal, Canada, 2014-05-12 –

Mel et Kio is a duo of French artists who create outsized graphic works which transform architectural space. Their mural art embellishes both public and private architectural spaces with a very strong poetic charge, by mixing techniques such as painting and tape art, for permanent or ephemeral works. Inhoma Design is an importer based in Montreal and invites professionals as well as non-professionals to discover Mel et Kio’s universe at the Montreal Design exhibition from the 22nd to the 25th of May 2014.

The art of mural design

Mel et Kio are precursors in “mural design” in France; since 2004, they have been presenting outsized works which adapt to indoor or outdoor architectural space. When Mel’s wall painting is combined with Kio’s texts, the architectural volume tells an illustrated story. Their graphic and poetic creations have a true impact on the way we understand, read or live in each architectural space.

Their work embodies a new conception of space and gives a palpable poetic dimension to their projects. All of their works begin with a story, made to measure, which immerse the visitor in a complete artistic project. Mel et Kio turn spaces into poetic places, and work in an urban context that is often dehumanized, emotionless and joyless. Their aims are to enchant everyday life by bringing a breath of fresh air, and to create a relationship with people who contemplate their work.

A double poetic vision

Mel et Kio met around drawing and writing. The duo quickly began telling poetic stories on walls. Kio, the story-teller, is interested in language’s poetic function and reflects on the specificity of a story told on a wall. Mel is a plastic artist who questions the impact of graphic gestures on architectural environment, and the way space is perceived.

Together, thanks to le Prédeau Studio (in Normandie, France) they create outsized graphic works as mural design to transform architectural spaces.

As far as possible from visual communication which imposes slogans, we play with its codes to redirect them towards a delicate vision with murmured semantics. Words are not overwhelming; they surround you with their musicality. The poetry suggests and provokes the image and gives room for everyone’s creativity through singing words.” – Mel et Kio

A close collaboration with architects

The originality of this duo is found in the nonstandard dimensions of their creations, which enables them to respond to any type of project. Freed from the constraints of a frame or a book, Mel et Kio use walls and architectural space as their areas of specialization.

They work in situ on scales that exceed the conventional measures of a work of art: the walls of a city, the facade of a building, a store front, a hotel, a professional office or a private residence. From the floor to the ceiling, with no limits, Mel et Kio invent the notion of “Mural Design”.

Mel et Kio’s original artistic approach has won over architects and interior designers. Collaboration with the duo enables them to offer an extraordinary, complete and poetic experience to those who inhabit the space. Mel et Kio unfold their stories on a regular basis for different brand projects in very diverse universes: fashion, selective distribution, perfume or hotel trade, which give artists a new play zone, and choose art as an exclusive communication tool.

A ready-to-fix collection

In order to satisfy clients who are willing to create their universe of mural style themselves, Mel et Kio offer a collection of ready-to-fix sticking tape of all sizes, created from their original drawings in India ink. The cut tape is joined to paint and calligraphy in successive layers for a touching new depth. Many collections are created every year and reflect their inspiration: light, delicate sentences and endearingly mischievous characters, or stories to write with words and drawings that started with a stroke of India ink.
