On January 14, 2016, Liat Margolis presented “All green roofs are equal – but some are more equal than others: An interdisciplinary and data-driven approach to assessing environmental performance” as part of the Building, Ecology, Science and Technology (B.E.S.T.) lecture series at the the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. The lecture was based on research conducted for the Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory (GRIT Lab) at the Daniels Faculty.

Green roofs have become an important component of sustainable building design in many cities across the world due to the broad range of environmental, economic, and social benefits they provide. A common misconception, however, is that all green roofs will meet the entire range of performance criteria, and that they will do so in an equal manner regardless of inherent or external factors, ranging from material composition to building height, urban context, climate pattern, and ecological community, among others. Green roof research today has begun to identify regionally specific considerations that offer designers opportunities to differentiate between and prioritize performance criteria, and contrast alternative design configurations accordingly. This presentation will report on the University of Toronto’s Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory (GRIT Lab) – it’s framework for integrated research approaches, which include interdisciplinary collaboration, industry partnerships, public outreach, time series data-driven experiments, and performance validation and optimization. The presentation will demonstrate how components of green roof systems interact and influence one another over time and generate different environmental and aesthetic outcomes.

Liat Margolis is Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. She is the Director of the Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory (GRIT Lab) at the University of Toronto, a research facility that is dedicated to evaluating and optimizing the environmental performance of green building technologies. The GRIT Lab is recognized as a leading test facility in North America and was awarded the 2013 American Society of Landscape Architects Excellence Award in Research. Liat is also Co-Director of the Centre for Landscape Research at the Daniels Faculty. She is a book review editor for Landscape Journal, and a member of the scientific committee of Sustainable Canada Dialogues, an initiative that mobilizes over sixty Canadian scholars to advance climate change mitigation in Canada. Her 2007 book Living Systems: Innovative Materials and Technologies for Landscape Architecture provides case study examples for successful integration of natural ecosystems with urban landscapes. Her 2014 book Out of Water, Design Solutions for Arid Regions discusses strategies for sustainable and resilient urban water management. Liat holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Masters of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
