League Prize 2015: Landing Studio

Landing Studio
Dan Adams and Marie Adams

Dan Adams and Marie Adams founded Somerville, MA-based Landing Studio in 2005. The studio focuses on developing “design tactics for positively integrating active global industries and infrastructures into their local contexts,” with particular emphasis on port facilities, ocean transport, and industrial ecologies.

In their League Prize lecture, titled “Primary Industry,” the pair detail research and recent projects related to the “contemporary state of decentralized industry” and the intersection between industry and the urban environment. Their series of installations for the LUMEN film festival on an active maritime salt dock in Staten Island included a series of sculpted salt domes that were used as projection screens for films, backdrops to art, and seating for visitors.

While Landing Studio has worked in a variety of industrial environments, including spaces under elevated highways, waterfront maritime spaces are a recurring theme. P.O.R.T., a remediated park landscape in Chelsea, MA, was transformed from a former waterfront asphalt and jet fuel terminal, including the salvage of the storage tanks for park elements. Rock Chapel Marine combines an upgraded salt dock with a public access landscape — “a surprisingly well-suited pair” — for a new type of integrated landscape that supports both industrial operations and public recreation in the Boston Harbor.
