Montreal, Canada, 2014-10-22 –

La Biennale de Montréal is pleased to announce programming and exhibition highlights for the opening week of BNLMTL 2014: L’avenir (looking forward), on view October 22, 2014 through January 4, 2015. From Monday, October 20 through Thursday, October 23, BNLMTL 2014 will present a dynamic series of artist’s talks, curatorial discussions, film screenings, performances and receptions at the Biennale’s principal venue, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC), and at partner venues throughout the city.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

The curatorial thread of L’avenir (looking forward) is how contemporary artists respond to current conditions by considering “what is to come?” Completely transformed by BNLMTL 2014’s works and scenography, the MAC will present the works of 43 artists, dedicating all of its exhibition and public spaces to the Biennale.

On view will be: a new installation by Montréal artist Étienne Tremblay-Tardif featuring a jungle of printed and projected images that soars into the building’s rotunda; the latest chapter of Berlin-based artist Klara Hobza’s lifelong project titled Diving Through Europe, an immersive sound and video installation that activates one of the building’s staircases and was produced by La Biennale de Montréal for BNLMTL 2014; the North American premiere of Richard Ibghy and Marilou Lemmens’ installation The Prophets (2013), composed of nearly 400 small whimsical sculptures made from ordinary household materials; and the final episode of Anton Vidokle and Pelin Tan’s trilogy-cum-three-channel video installation 2084: a science fiction show (2012- 2014), which was recently filmed in Tripoli and Beirut and produced by La Biennale de Montréal for BNLMTL 2014. Ryan Gander’s new installation Tomorrow’s Achievements (2014) condenses many of the artist’s interests: artistic dogmas, future histories, temporality, theatricality and

the use of humour as a narrative device. The work consists of four moving curtains of different widths, hung around a gallery from two motorized rails. Two curtains move in one direction and two in the other, revealing and concealing the works of other artists in this gallery, while also occasionally obscuring doorways. With this new piece, Gander theatrically engages revelation through a lens of speculation.

“Exploring the curatorial thread of ‘what is to come,’ the artists featured in L’avenir (looking forward) envision startlingly different futures,” says Sylvie Fortin, Executive and Artistic Director of BNLMTL 2014. “The Biennale draws inspiration from the city’s current and historical context and expands from the local to consider how it is connected to the global. In the Biennale’s pre- sentation of both local and international artists, a stage is set to reflect on current challenges and art’s potential to influence the future.”

Exhibition highlights taking place at partner venues throughout the city include the North Ameri- can premiere of Shirin Neshat’s film Illusions & Mirrors (2013) at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA); a performance-installation by Goldin+Senneby titled M&A (2013/2014), which explores questions of performance and investment at the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art; a projection by Chinese artist Li Ran titled After Freedom, Before Indulgence (2013) at the Darling Foundry; and an intervention by Lawrence Weiner which affirms that “THE ARCTIC CIRCLE IS BROKEN” at Place Ville Marie, one of the city’s busiest office and retail complex, among many others. Weiner’s work is one of a three-part concept, developed by the artist in Canada in 1969 and produced for the first time by La Biennale de Montréal for BNLMTL 2014. His two accompanying pieces will be presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and at the Darling Foundry, thereby transforming Montreal’s downtown into an inscription surface for the project. In collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and through November 23 (Wednesday to Sunday evenings), BNLMTL 2014 also presents Krzysztof Wodiczko and Isabelle Hayeur’s new projects, respectively: Wodiczko’s Homeless Projection: Place des Arts, a new in situ projection in which the bodies and voices of the neighbourhood’s homeless inhabit the Théâtre Maisonneuve’s surface; and Murs aveugles, Hayeur’s architectural in situ projection which paints a portrait of current political horizons and draws inspiration from the peaceful protest movement “Occupy,” located next to the Saint-Laurent metro station.
