On Friday, June 27, 2025, as part of AUD’s Summer Programs (TeenArch & JumpStart), Katy Barkan and Claus Benjamin Freyinger presented a joint lecture exploring contemporary architectural representation, studio culture, and the evolving relationship between drawing, making, and digital workflows. The session offered Summer Program students a unique lens into practice and pedagogy, bridging analog craft and digital experimentation.
Speaker Bios
Katy Barkan
Katy Barkan is a Lecturer at UCLA AUD whose teaching and practice focus on representation, form-making, and the relationship between drawing and space. Within the architecture curriculum, her work emphasizes how media and graphic thinking influence design decisions, particularly in early studio phases. She brings a studio culture lens that values iteration, analog/digital hybrid workflows, and material thinking in architecture.
Claus Benjamin Freyinger
Claus Benjamin Freyinger (also listed as Benjamin Freyinger) is a Lecturer at UCLA AUD and co-founding principal of the Los Angeles Design Group (LADG). His firm works across scales from installations to architecture, drawing on a background in fine art curatorial work, fabrication, and digital/mixed-media approaches. Freyinger holds a BA in Art History from Boston College and an M.Arch from UCLA. His design interests include repurposing architectural ideas of the late baroque for contemporary audiences and exploring intersections between architecture and fine art.
