Jane Wernick: Commodity, Firmness and Delight: An Engineer’s Response

The 10th Goldstein Lecture in Architecture, Engineering, and Science
MIT Architecture / Building Technology

Jane will talk about how she sees collaboration between the architect, client and all the members of the design team as the key to developing designs that not only perform well and meet the brief, but also bring delight to those who experience them. She will talk about projects that she has worked on, and the process by which the ideas were developed.

Jane Wernick CBE FREng Hon FRIBA FIStructE FICE is a structural engineer who likes to work on projects that give delight. With Arup from 1976-1998, she started and ran their Los Angeles office from 1986-88. Her most notable Arup project was the Millennium Wheel.

She won the 2013 CBI First Woman of the Built Environment Award. She is a member of Design Council CABE’s Design Review Panel, the Edge, and Building Futures, for which she edited the book, ‘Building Happiness – Architecture to Make You Smile’.
