It is always a changing stream of water before we meet the big blue sea

The struggle to open up to your family, especially to your parents, an authoritative figure in your life is a common occurrence which is experienced in most Asian families. In Asian cultures, vulnerability is often seen as a portrayal of weakness. It’s always a changing stream of water before we meet the big blue sea tackles the hard truth about mental health and its ramifications, and aims to inspire one to also open up a conversation with their family and loved ones.

The short film is a visual record of an open conversation Prim Patnasiri had with her father which released the taboo surrounding what she and her family went through when she was suffering from severe depression during her childhood. The video is an honest communication that unfolds itself through a momentarily uncomfortable experience of opening up, strived through the desire of a father and a daughter longing to understand one another. The film explores a renewing and rebuilding of Patnasiri’s identity through uncovering who she was and who she is today through the juxtapositions of home video footages taken by Patnasiri’s mother, her own recreations, found footages, and a self-portrait performance. For Patnasiri, the process of making this short film became a sort of therapy, an attempt to give the past a better understanding and to reshape a disoriented history. By involving all three members of her family in the making process, Patnasiri and her family were forced to come together and rebuild a bond that was lost.
