II BY IV DESIGN Beautifully Integrates Art with Interiors

Toronto, Canada, 2017-09-21 –

Creating a sense of place, art can bolster an interior by enhancing its overall atmosphere. Art can arouse one’s curiosity and draw you in. And experienced in relation to its setting, it can positively affect your mood. Art can also set the tone for a theme, thereby shaping one’s impression of a space.

Art requires an audience to make it complete. With its natural ability to slow one’s progression through space and encourage interactions, art often promotes community connectivity. In a study by the Knight’s Foundation that surveyed 43,000 people, it was found that aesthetics of a place is indeed linked to one’s attachment to their community.

Integrating art within interior design is something that II BY IV DESIGN does exceptionally well.

By considering art early in a project, it can become the feature of a space that adds character, colour and texture, rather than being an afterthought. This also allows one to consider installation details, such as lighting, placement and creating built-in structures, like a niche or platform in which to effectively display the piece.

The impressive faceted millwork canopy that defines the lobby of Minto 30Roe is an excellent example of II BY IV DESIGN’s outstanding ability to capture the imagination of those who experience it. A statement address at the heart of a busy and charming midtown Toronto neighbourhood, the interiors are a true expression of fashion, art and contemporary social culture. Evoking the feeling of a gallery, guests and residents are greeted by an expansive double-storey lobby with a grand sculptural wood screen constructed by Eventscape. Distinguishing the space, the screen frames the concierge desk and banquette seating, while setting the stage for the other works of art found throughout the amenities within this inspiring 34-storey condominium.

The articulated screen, finished in wood laminate with incorporated window panels, has a significant visual presence from the street. Creating an awe-inspiring effect for passersby, it makes a bold and dynamic statement during the day and is a wonderfully illuminated monument of shadow and light in the evening. The screen creates such a commanding presence in the lobby of Minto 30Roe, that it was recently awarded winner of the Residential Art category at the 2017 CODA Awards. Judged by an esteemed panel of 22 jurors from the international design, architecture and art worlds, jurors included Gisue Hariri of Hariri & Hariri Architecture, Keith Fox of Phaidon, Nora Atkinson of the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum and Cindy Allen of Interior Design magazine.

The CODA Awards, sponsored by CODAworx, is a global platform that celebrates the integration of commissioned art into interior, architectural and public spaces, and this year’s program received 465 entries from 21 different countries. Winning projects best illustrate what can happen when artists and design professionals work together to create artful spaces within our built environment.

Another example of II BY IV DESIGN’s strength with fusing art within interiors include Kasa Moto, the award winning contemporary Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Toronto’s high-end luxury retail district. A stellar case of art used to create a sense of place, the restaurant features lush paintings with an Asian theme by local artist Tisha Myles. The pieces lend a particular softness, offsetting the geometric forms found within. And the paintings are side-lit which renders a sense of depth while enhancing the painterly qualities, casting yet another layer of texture to the restaurant’s interiors.

2018 will see some notable up-and-coming projects from this charismatic studio, which when completed, will include public art installations that inspire, motivate and influence how we feel about the space they have carefully designed. In one such project, local and international artistry have been creatively combined to animate the interiors of the new luxurious Marriott Signature Hotel & Residences. Representative of the surrounding city in motion, a city that is emerging as a centre for technology, transitions between the interior spaces creates a journey for guests. Celebrating the juxtaposition of unexpected combinations, the hotel will feature an intricate glass ribbon ceiling sculpture by the renowned Preciosa, lighting designers from the Czech Republic. The dynamic, curvilinear piece will add energy to the lobby while contrasting linear and textural details. It is in this opposing of elements that creates an atmosphere filled with motion, exciting a sense of discovery among guests.

II BY IV DESIGN expertly incorporates art within interiors, adding a unique dimension and augments one’s experiences within a space. As quoted by Partner, Keith Rushbrook, “Art is a powerful tool. It can inspire. It can alter one’s perception and it can evoke contemplation. But most of all, art has the ability to enhance the essence of a space, creating truly amazing and memorable experiences.”
