Hubert Klumpner & Alfredo Brillembourg: Informality's the new normality (September 17, 2014)

Hubert Klumpner and Alfredo Brillembourg argue, “Informality’s the new normality.” They describe the shock of encountering the favelas of Caracas after studying architecture at Columbia, wondering if architects could assist people to build for themselves. They illustrate their thoughts about scarcity as a value with the “the world’s tallest squat,” an unfinished skyscraper in Caracas squatters transformed into a functioning community. They describe several of their projects, including the Vertical Gym , the Grotao Community Center, the Metro Cable transportation system, and the Power Shack housing for a township outside Capetown.
