Harness: Creating Change with Spofford Market (Majora Carter)

Wednesday, September 19, 2012
Wood Auditorium

Majora Carter, Majora Carter Group

Leading Urban Revitalization Strategist and MacArthur Fellow Majora Carter discusses the potentials of gentrification—like forces of wind, solar, and fire—to be harnessed for public good. In particular, how to “create the economic diversity in poor communities that encourages more successful people to stay, poor people to have more hope, and newcomers to feel great about what they are contributing to,” in relation to a proposed transformation of the Bridges Juvenile Center in the Spofford Avenue Neighborhood of the South Bronx. “Concentrated poverty diminishes hope and possibility for those who can’t escape,” Carter notes. “How do we harness the power of gentrification to create better communities with more potential for everyone?”
