From Splines to Lines: Framing Pictures, Transcending Marks – Part 4

Lecture date: 2005-01-27

Framing Pictures, Transcending Marks – Walter Benjamin on the Line – the fourth in an eight-part lecture series which investigates how the line is understood in order to rethink its history. Walter Benjamin wrote a number of early texts that tried to rethink the relation between lines, surfaces, and marks. His writings attempted to break the link that structures of representation had with the ways in which these terms were understood. Andrew Benjamin closely explores Walter Benjamins writings to look at what happens to these terms once they are opened up in this way.

Andrew Benjamin is currently Professor of Critical Theory in Design and Architecture at the University of Sydney.
