On October 29, 2013, the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design welcomed award-winning architect Belinda Tato, of the Madrid based group of architects ecosistema urbano co-founded with Jose Luis Vallejo, to present the annual Jeffrey Cook Trust Memorial Lecture.

In this lecture, titled “From Ego-Design to Eco-Design towards Network-Design”, Belinda presented on their group’s work within the fields of urbanism, architecture, engineering and sociology. Their approach is defined as urban social design including the design of environments, spaces and dynamics in order to improve self-organization of citizens, social interaction within communities and their relationship with the environment.

Recent projects include the design of an experimental urban playground in Dordrecht, Netherlands, a waste to resources building on the outskirts of Madrid called the “Ecopolis Plaza”, a network design project called “dreamhamar” for the future of the main public space of Hamar, Norway and the design of the new experimental Educational Centre for the Reggio Children Foundation in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Since 2000, they have received more than 30 awards in national and international architecture design competitions and during the last four years their work has been heavily covered in the media including national and international press, television programs, and specialized publications from 30 countries, and their projects have been exhibited at multiple galleries, museums and institutions.

ecosistema urbano is also running a platform that develops social networks and manages online channels around the subject of creative urban sustainability. ecosistema develops social software, exploring the new possibilities technology offers to empower people and improve social connectivity and interaction.

Besides running their practice, they are usually engaged in teaching at different educational institutions worldwide including Harvard GSD.
