Ferreira Café

The celebrated Peel Street restaurant undergoes a makeover in time for its 20th anniversary!

Montréal, Canada, 2015-10-22 –

The iconic Peel Street restaurant has re-opened its doors following major renovations. With a fresh, updated interior design that aptly reflects its Portuguese roots, the Ferreira Café keeps up with the times while continuing to keep its regulars happy!

New Era, New Décor

“With this new décor, it’s as if we’ve signed a lease for another 20 years!” explains Carlos Ferreira, owner of the Ferreira Group. Serving delicious Portuguese cuisine to Montrealers for soon two decades, the Ferreira Café is a culinary reference for downtown business professionals and gourmet palates that is definitely here to stay. The changes made to its interior décor, however, mark a new chapter in the establishment’s history.

“For us, these changes represent a positive evolution of the family business,” highlights Sandra Ferreira, Director of Operations for the Ferreira Group and daughter of owner Carlos Ferreira. Renovations were completed on schedule by the architectural firm Provencher Roy, under the watchful eye and exquisite taste of designers Pascale Vaillancourt and Paul William Francoeur. The designers endeavoured to infuse the space with a breath of fresh air while still respecting the restaurant’s origins. “Above all, we were inspired by Carlos’ Portuguese roots,” he explains. “We wanted the décor to reflect his homeland by adding slightly yellowish glass panels to the hand-trowelled plaster walls for relief and texture. To this, we fixed black porcelain swallows, a traditional Portuguese symbol of family, loyalty and love that brings good luck.” An open mezzanine, a new private room and the Rosa salon revive the space at the heart of the restaurant.  In addition to entering a new era with a new décor, the Ferreira Café has also revamped and modernized its website in line with the restaurant’s fresh, new interior design.

A Peel Street Institution

For soon to be 20 years, the Ferreira Café has stood out as a cornerstone of fine Portuguese cuisine, committed to always offering fresh, superior quality products. Founded by Carlos Ferreira, the Peel Street institution successfully promotes the flavours and recipes of his native land in Quebec. The Ferreira Group welcomed Chef João Dias to its culinary team in 2013. Hailing from Portugal, he has reworked the classic recipes on which the restaurant was founded in order to offer an updated version of the restaurant’s fresh and authentic cuisine. Furthermore, Wine Nights, a weekly Tuesday night happening, was launched this summer. Given that the Ferreira Café’s impressive wine list, which includes many private imports and comprises one of Canada’s most select reserve of premium Portuguese wine, is offered at 50% off, it’s no surprise that Tuesday Wine Nights are a great success. Don’t miss it!

About the Ferreira Group

Ferreira Café opened for business in 1996 on Peel Street and quickly became Montreal’s beacon for Portuguese gastronomy. A popular spot for the business crowd as well as public figures, the Café has enjoyed a solid reputation through the years thanks to its uncompromising authenticity and professional, courteous service.

Eight years later, Vasco da Gama opens a few doors down from the famous restaurant to serve high-end sandwiches to a hurried gourmet crowd, as well as offering a catering service.

The year 2014 marked a year of new beginnings for the Ferreira Group with the launch of Taverne F that serves pesticos, small, typical Portuguese dishes to share.

Throughout all of his establishments, Carlos Ferreira, proud ambassador of his home country, is committed to offering quality cuisine that respects Portuguese traditions and lifestyle. The Ferreira Group also owns a 20-hectare vineyard and olive orchard in the Portuguese region of Douro. Since 2011, the Ferreira Group has produced its own wine, the F, available exclusively in its establishments. Moreover, in 2014 the Group launched F Reserve, its first gourmet olive oil produced from its own olive orchard.
