As cities seek to plan for the age of mass decarceration the role of the designer is critical in supporting and leading the systems level change required to do so. Deanna Van Buren Executive Director and Design Director of Designing Justice Designing Spaces presented her journey in establishing a unique professional practice focused on using design to end mass incarceration. She presented her current pedagogy of engagement, built projects and new concepts her firm is developing to help those most impacted by the system known as the “New Jim Crow”.
