Current Work: Winka Dubbeldam

Recorded: October 10, 2013

Founded by Winka Dubbeldam in 1994, New York-based Archi-Tectonics pursues elegance and innovation in the exploration of form and sustainability. Inspired by industrial design products such as airplane wings and car parts, Dubbeldam seeks efficiency and optimization with an abiding concern toward “three fields of investigation: armature, surface, and interface.” Working internationally at a range of scales, Archi-Techtonics maximizes the value of digital design to create innovative buildings with clarity of structure and design aesthetic.

In excerpts from her Current Work lecture, titled “Intrinsic,” Dubbdeldam presents three completed and current projects: the Vestry Building, a nine-unit residential building of “stacked villas” in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood; the Ports 1961 flagship retail store in Shanghai inspired by the harbor culture of the historic Bund; and a master plan for a new city center with a municipal hall and mixed-use development in Holon, Israel. These projects represent the firm’s emphasis on sustainability and smart building systems — through natural ventilation, passive solar energy, optimized façade systems, and more — within buildings with an adaptable and efficient use of space.

The Current Work series invites significant international figures who powerfully influence contemporary architectural practice and shape the future of the built environment to present their work and ideas to a public audience.
