After reviewing some of his earlier work with DMJM and Gruen Associates, César Pelli discusses in detail the project for the Commons shopping center in Columbus, Indiana (1973). He stresses their attempt to create useful public space, and how the proposed shopping mall would fit in with the 1870 streetscape of Washington Street.
