Augusto H. Álvarez (November 19, 1980) Part 1 of 3

Augusto H. Álvarez describes making scale models for his electric train set when he was a child, sparking his interest in engineering and architecture. As a student he discovered the work of Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. Later he became interested in Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Section. Álvarez discusses a drawing of his first project, a prefabricated office building, and his competition entry for the 1968 Olympics. He highlights a building he designed using curtain wall construction in Mexico City. Referring to construction, he states, “Aluminum is a business. Not a material.” He shows photographs of his office, the IBM building, and the Bancomer Headquarters done in collaboration with Juan Sordo Madaleno , both in Mexico City.
