David Abel is a poet, editor, and educator, and the proprietor of Passages Bookshop & Gallery. Three new books appeared in the latter half of 2017: Selected Durations, an artist’s book from the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada, Reno, and two chapbooks from Portland publishers, XIV Eclipses (Couch Press), and sequitur her (press-press-pull). With Sam Lohmann, he publishes the Airfoil chapbook series. Since moving to Portland he has published twenty-five issues of the free poetry & art broadside series Envelope and devised more than thirty performance, film, theater, and intermedia projects, both solo and with a wide range of collaborators. In addition to curating regular changing exhibits at Passages, he organized the exhibitions Chax Press: Publishing Poetics for the Pacific NW College of Art and Object Poems for 23 Sandy Gallery. He is a founding member of the Spare Room reading series, now in its sixteenth year, and was an inaugural Research Fellow of the Center for Art + Environment of the Nevada Museum of Art.

In this Artist Talk, Abel speaks about John Outterbridge’s “From Within, from Containment Series”, 1969, and how it relates to his work.
