Artificial Imperfection – with Paola Antonelli | R&D Salon 24

How will humans interact with robots when they become a more visible part of our everyday lives? how will robots interact with us? As AI matures, how human-like do we want their intelligence to be? Will this translate into a radical end to human exceptionalism? Or will this remind us that the essence of our human nature lies in its fallibility and imperfection? Will AI teach us to be more human? In this R&D Salon, MoMA curator Paola Antonelli and guests discuss some of the most pressing issues related to artificial intelligence and its current (and future) effects on our daily lives.

Speakers:

Kate Crawford: Academic, author, expert on the social implications of artificial intelligence, and co-founder and co-director of the AI Now Research Institute at NYU;

Stephanie Dinkins: Transdisciplinary artist interested in creating platforms for ongoing dialog about artificial intelligence as it intersects race, gender, aging and our future histories;

Rediet Abebe: Fellow at Cornell University interested in algorithms, artificial intelligence, and applications to social good;

Fernanda Viégas: Computational designer whose work focuses on the social, collaborative, and artistic aspects of information visualization;

and Martin Wattenberg: Computer scientist and artist who is interested in using visual tools to understand systems based on machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Fernanda and Martin are co-leaders of Google’s “Big Picture” data visualization group, part of the Google Brain team; and they have co-founded People + AI Research initiative at Google.
