Annie Chu & Rick Gooding : Friction : a duality (March 17, 2021)

After Elena Manferdini’s introduction, Annie Chu and Rick Gooding discuss three seed ideas that came out of their experiences as students at SCI-Arc in the 1980s, that have informed their thinking, process and design ever since: “1. A meta about how to begin. 2. The utility of shared art references. 3. Fundamental architectural elements, interiors, surfaces, materials, colors and heavy things”

After thanking “alumni” of their office, they discuss several projects, including:
–The Autry resource center (2017)
–Hollywood Hills house (2015)
–USC Hoffman Hall renovation (2016)

And several exhibition designs, including:
“The Architecture of R. M. Schindler” (MOCA, 2001)
“Outside the box : Edition Jacob Samuel” (Hammer museum, 2010)
“Masters of American comics” (MOCA & Hammer, 2005)
“Visual voyages” (The Huntington, 2017)
“Bright golden haze” (Oklahoma contemporary arts center, 2020)
“A. Quincy Jones: building for better living” (Hammer, 2013)
