Located in Shipai Urban Village, this project discusses notions of generational amnesia and loss of traditions as the migrating population abandons heritage in favour of urban life. Utilising Kinect 3D scanning and Processing technology, forgotten artefacts are digitally recomposed into an architectural surface developing over time as traditions are forgotten.
Gustave Doré’s illustrations of Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ present a glimpse into mans fascination with paradise, a melancholic portrayal of purgatory as a space between two others. The urban village becomes the purgatory between the rural and the city, a space of temporality and confinement. Traces of the migrating populating are left in the architecture as those chosen progress beyond the boundary of the village, into the urban city, creating a surreal amalgamation of architectural references that reflect upon rural traditions.
