Adolf Krischanitz – Architecture is the Difference Between Architecture

Lecture date: 1997-03-11

‘Architecture is not only rational thought, not only feeling, not only utilisation; rather, it is the development of awareness through doing. It is continuously being put to the test. Architecture is a system within movable boundaries, quietly seeking an extra-structural authority that would watch over the unit (centre). The play of change and continuity, intro-extrospection, artificial and everyday language as a “play of differences freed from boundaries” is plural literature. Architecture is always the transformation of other architectures. What authority determines the free play of relationships? There is no ultimate authority in differential systems. In architecture, definition of the absolute is neither necessary nor of interest. The decisive point is the perception of what is equal: there is something present in us that defines the before and after as well as any interference. Architecture is the difference between architecture. The congealing of architectural awareness through the factor of time changes the perspective.’

Adolf Krischanitz has been working independently as an architect in Vienna since 1979, and co-founded the UM BAU magazine in the same year. He has taught throughout Austria and Germany, his work has been widely exhibited, and his projects have won numerous awards and competitions.
