A Heritage House Renewed to a Contemporary Family Home (House Tour)

Balwyn House sees Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers transform a previously dark Arts and Crafts style house in Melbourne’s east into a dynamic, light-filled contemporary family home.

The heritage-protected façade of this 1930s family home is beautifully detailed. Wanting to respect the original identity, Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers made minimal changes apart from several contemporary elements that set the tone for the remainder of the house.

It is at the back that a new language takes hold – one that speaks to simple, geometric forms and sculptural elements. There is a new zinc-clad wing and a concrete awning constructed at a striking angle.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas are situated in the new wing at the back of the contemporary family home. Being south-facing, the architects were tasked with the challenge of getting natural light into this space. Their solution involved an internal atrium garden with large glass windows, capturing the northern sun and filling these all-important living spaces with natural light.

As well as enlarging the footprint and gaining natural light, the clients required a functional and streamlined kitchen to complement the rest of the home. Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers have designed a kitchen that achieves beauty, practicality and ease thanks to a minimal aesthetic and streamlined appliances by Fisher & Paykel including the Column refrigerator and freezer, integrated double DishDrawer and ovens and cooktop from the Minimal Range.

Robson Rak Architects and Interior Designers’ innate ability to marry contemporary and heritage architecture while catering to the needs of their clients is beautifully demonstrated in Balwyn House.
