Wood Auditorium, Avery Hall
Diplomats: Global Practice and Representation
Poised at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and ecology, the work of GSAPP professor Amale Andraos and alum Dan Wood has taken them from New York City’s Lower East Side to St. Petersburg, Russia, where WORKac’s master plan for a cultural center on New Holland Island transforms existing warehouses into a “city within a city,” and to Libreville, where their under-construction Assembly Hall uses locally sourced materials to create a new icon for the West African capital. There, a dramatically sloped roof and circular design weave interior and exterior space, while three courtyard-gardens, a central 1,000-seat auditorium, and a porous façade with louvers made from African limestone provide continuous views of the surrounding Gabonese landscape.
