Learn How to Remove Edge Fringe, White Edges or outlines while selecting hair in Photoshop CC. We will use the Select and Mask tool in Photoshop CC for hair masking and then use a special technique as discussed in the tutorial to accomplish cutting out hair perfectly in Photoshop. Often while selecting hair either using the quick selection tool or select and mask, no matter how contrasting the background is than the subject, no matter how flat the background is, when you create a mask of the selection, it leaves a thin white fringe around the hair which makes the composite in photo manipulation look fake.
It especially happens when your subject is originally captured in a bright background and you cut her hair out and put her on a dark background. The thing is, hair is very thin, it takes on the color of the background. So, supposing your subject is captured with a white background, the subject’s hairs will take in that white color and hence will make it difficult for you to put her in a black background. Though, it will work very well with a bright background like the sky. In this video, we will learn how to get rid of that edge fringe so that no matter what the background is, your image will have more flexibility to fit into the composite.
To put this into perspective, we’ll use the option “Decontaminate Colors” in Select and Mask window. In this video, we’ll also dive deep into how it exactly works and when to use it. It’s important to note that this will only work on Photoshop CC 2015.5 and above because Select and Mask was introduced with that version. It is much better than refine edge tool could ever do and worth the upgrade.
