“How to” Mandala Drawing of the Eiffel Tower

This video is about how I created a mandala drawing of the The Eiffel Tower which I hope to print on shirts and canvas along with a couple other designs. First I got my hands on a copyright free image from the national archives. The photo is in almost pure elevation so recreating it in CAD was easy. I didn’t need to take the time to draw the true thickness of all the steel elements because I know that I can change line thickness in CAD, but more importantly in illustrator. The structure is symmetrical so I only need to draw one half. Once I had the image complete I knew I wanted a circular design so I thought about how many times it should be repeated around an axis. I eventually settled on 8. I also knew after working on the drawing for a little while that the Mandala needed a border so I took some of the detailed iron work and created a pattern. The spiral I used is based on the spiral found in the golden rectangle. After that I took a look at the infill areas. I thought this should reflect the decorative iron work of the structure as well. Eventually I landed on this design and filigree. I pulled it into illustrator by saving as a pdf. Then separated the drawing into layers so I could assign each color line a line weight. The tower is the central focus of the piece so its been assigned the thickest line weights. The exterior of the structure has the thickest iron and also serves as a visual outline which makes the tower element stand out. I’ve added additional interpretive filigree elements as infill and of course the shape of a heart. It goes without saying, it’s Paris. So check out my kickstarter campaign for this design and a couple others. I’m putting together shirts and canvas prints if theirs enough interest. I’m Doug Patt. We’ll see you, next time.
